New Jersey Divorce Case: Slutsky v. Slutsky

divorce

In a recent NJ divorce case (Slutsky v. Slutsky), decided March 25, 2026, the NJ Appellate Court awarded the Wife, in equitable distribution 50% of the value of her husband’s law practice.

The husband’s partnership interest in a large law firm was valued at $501,000 based on his annual income. of $896,000.

Under NJ law it’s very unusual for a non-owning spouse to receive fifty percent of a marital business.  Often the award is approximately one-third of the business value, unless the non-owning spouse owns or worked in the business.

This was a marriage of 30 years and three children.

The Appellate Court also affirmed the trial court’s decision to award the wife $487,000 of her counsel fees representing 35% of the legal fees she incurred.
